The Ultimate Filmmaker's Quarantine Guide

We are in uncertain and strange times. These days feel like the intro to a post-apocalyptic film. While most of us are in the middle of a 3+ week mandatory stay at home order what are we to do with all of this unexpected time and travel limitations?

Connect with industry friends

Video chat with directors, producers, other DoPs you admire, and your friends in the industry. This is a great time to catch up with others and maybe spark an idea for that passion project you wanted to do with them. A lot of people have some time now and aren't focused on a production job. Now is the time to hit up those people you admire or haven't talked to in a while. Reaching out to collaborators also keeps you feeling connected to the industry even if production is all but gone. The time you spend continuing to build relationships in never a waste.

[Netflix] and chill

Catch up on those shows you have said you always want to see but never had the time. Watch the cinema classics that you know you should watch. Use this time you're watching the show to study and analyze what the filmmakers are doing. Gaining insight and inspiration from what they are achieving. Watch the films you have already seen and really dive deeper into the filmmaker's intent. Use this Netflix and chill as a Netflix and study, not as catchy I'll admit, but a more productive use of time.

Exercise the body

It doesn't have to be a lot, don't go trying to become a bodybuilder, but use the time to focus on staying healthy. There are a lot of youtube videos on no-equipment exercises that focus on various areas of the body. So you have no excuse. Keeping the body moving is going to help with anxiety and give you a sense of accomplishment. production days are often physically demanding so don't be left in the dust during this quarantine time.

Exercise the mind

Meditation is a great way to help reset the mind and calm the anxiety. Try it for just 5 minutes. I promise you won't regret it. Try the free sessions from the wonderful people at headspace.

This is a brilliant time to listen to those podcasts or audiobooks, read a book, or watch some masterclasses online. In fact, for a limited time check out these free masterclasses from ARRI and Shane Hurlbut. If you prefer books or a good podcast you can have a look at the Ultimate Cinematographer's Resource Guide for the best cinematography resources out right now.

Work on your portfolio presentation

Spend this time to work on your website, demo reel, Vimeo account, Linkedin, etc. Even though most work has been postponed, it doesn't mean you can't keep marketing yourself and continuing to show off your work.

Work on that passion project you have in your head

Maybe it's finally time to work on that idea you've had forever or finish the edit for your most recent project. Spend the downtime finishing up that passion project you've had on the back burner for a while. You have no excuses now!
